Ningxia leads ecological protection of Yellow River Basin

On March 7, NPC deputy Li Yuhua reported the situation of promoting the ecological protection of the Yellow River Basin in Ningxia Hui autonomous region at the second session of the 14th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing.

Ningxia regards the construction of a leading area for the ecological protection of and high-quality development in the Yellow River Basin as a significant mission.

Ningxia took the lead in becoming the first irrigation area in the country to integrate measurement and control, the first provincial-level water network pilot area in Northwest China, and a national digital twin hydraulic computing hub. It also pioneered the first cross-provincial water rights transaction, and completed the construction of the World Irrigation Engineering Heritage Exhibition Center.

In addition, Ningxia has comprehensively launched the Ningxia campaign to tackle the environmental issues at the bend of the Yellow River. The annual inflow of sediment into the Yellow River has been reduced from 100 million tons to 20 million tons, and the soil conservation rate has reached 77.3 percent.

Meanwhile, Ningxia adheres to green, low-carbon, and high-quality development. The value added of high-tech manufacturing has grown by over 40 percent, with its production capacity of aramid ranking first nationwide. The output of coal-to-oil has exceeded 4 million tons for three consecutive years.

Li introduced that Ningxia has been focusing on its ecological governance, green and low-carbon development. It has made a series of breakthroughs, created a number of landmark achievements, and accumulated replicable experiences. Applying the governance of the Yellow River as an opportunity, Ningxia has made contributions to national energy security, food security, ecological security, and economic security.
