Hou has devoted herself to traditional Chinese opera performance in rural areas. Her plays are close to people's lives. During her performances, she has also mobilized other actors to train the audience, guiding more people to join the Qinqiang opera team. While cultivating a large number of young and middle-aged opera fans in rural areas, she has also enriched the cultural life of the local people, laying a foundation for future opera inheritance and talent training.

Over the past forty years, from a common actor to the award winner of "Chinese Drama Plum Blossom Prize", Hou Yan has constantly learned from others and eventually formed her own performing style. She is the leading actor of many traditional and new Chinese dramas, and has participated in over 5,000 performances.
"The audience has high expectations of us, therefore we have to do our best work and let them rate our performance", said Hou. As a representative at the 20th CPC National Congress, Hou Yan said she would continue to improve herself and strive to be a conveyor of Chinese drama.
