Ningxia wines winning acclaim on world stage

Autonomous region making a name for itself internationally and domestically by creating award-winning products and thousands of jobs

Ningxia wine, a rising new star in the world’s wine family, is popular and renowned for its profound cultural connotations and hidden artistic value.

Over the decades, Ningxia has shouldered the mission, seized opportunities and promoted the high-quality development of the wine industry. Chinese wine is now stunning the world.

The region is building the Ningxia National Open Development Comprehensive Pilot Zone and has successfully held the China (Ningxia) International Wine Culture and Tourism Expo.

Wine products from Helan Mountain have been selected as the first batch of 100 geographical indication items in China.

The International Organization of Vine and Wine awarded Ningxia the “wine capital of the world” and the Global Wine Tourism Organization named Ningxia a “global wine tourism destination”.

Under the nourishment of the Yellow River and with the natural endowment of topography, soil and varying temperatures, the foothills of Helan Mountain have become a hot spot for investment and business, creating wines with an elegant oriental style and Chinese characteristics.

In recent years, the Party committee and government of the Ningxia Hui autonomous region have made great efforts to build the wine sector into a major characteristic and advantageous industry, give full play to cultivate the production area at the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain and adhere to the integrated management of wineries.

By 2025, the area of the wine grape base in Ningxia is expected to reach 1 million mu, or 66,600 hectares, with an annual output of more than 300 million bottles of high-quality wine, and a comprehensive output value of 100 billion yuan ($14.47 billion). The wine development model, regionalized layout, industrialization promotion and market-oriented development have continuously strengthened the entire industrial chain and integrated the industry with cultural tourism, leisure and wellness, business logistics and e-commerce.

As a wine grape production area, Ningxia has broad prospects and unlimited potential for the transformation of the wine industry based on technological innovation.

It focuses on methods such as high-quality seedlings, planting management, fermentation technology, product deployment, storage and transportation, and quality supervision.

Ningxia has also enhanced talent recruitment and training, constructed an innovation platform and conducted core technology research.

Ningxia has established three professional wine colleges and four key laboratories in the autonomous region.

It has revved up efforts to build a national high-quality vine planting and grape-breeding base, accelerated its own breeding system and fermentation technical standards, and focused on the development of unique and diverse wine products.

Ningxia strives to build digital smart wineries and create planting technologies such as shallow ditch clearing, sloping shelves, deep fertilization, unified defense and high-efficiency water-saving irrigation.

Now the innovation and development of Ningxia’s wine industry is booming. Ningxia has won thousands of awards across four top international competitions, ranking first in China with 60 percent of the nation’s medals.

Wine is a purple dream and a green hope. Ningxia should combine the development of the wine industry with strengthened management of the Yellow River floodplain and ecological restoration.

We take Helan Mountain as the experimental field to practice the concept of “lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets”, strive for ecological protection in the Yellow River basin and focus on the construction of a 195-kilometer vine-planting corridor.

Today, the Baili Grape Corridor at the foothills of Helan Mountain is lush and picturesque. The planting bases are thick with greenery and characteristic wineries. The Yellow River is a green ecological barrier for soil and water conservation and ecological conservation. The habitat of wild animals and plants has been restored.

As a universal culture of the world, wine is the best image ambassador to promote Ningxia.

Based on the goal of “positioning at the national level and demonstrating internationalization”, we take the wine industry as a starting point to serve the Belt and Road Initiative and promote the development of Ningxia’s opening-up.

The Ningxia National Open Development Comprehensive Pilot Zone and the China (Ningxia) International Wine Culture and Tourism Expo are channels to spread the voice of Ningxia, link the region with the international market and promote its wine and wine culture. Now Ningxia has frequent economic and trade exchanges with domestic and overseas markets. Its products are exported to more than 40 countries and regions around the world.

The wine industry is not only a characteristic industry in Ningxia, but also benefits its people.

Local residents can not only increase incomes by planting grapes and transferring land, but gain revenue by working in the vineyards on their doorstep.

The industry has formed a mechanism between farmers and enterprises and plays an important role in consolidating and expanding the achievements of poverty alleviation and promoting the overall revitalization of the countryside. Now the wine industry in Ningxia is closely linked with the revenues of the common people, providing 130,000 jobs every year.
